The Music Modernization Act (MMA) was signed into law October, 2018 to simplify U.S. copyright law.  It impacts how every songwriter in the world gets paid – or if they’re paid at all - when their music streams in the U.S. on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital music services.

The MMA creates a “Mechanical Licensing Collective”;  an organization with 14 board members who decide what to do with unpaid royalty money when they can’t find the owner. These people can recommend taking the unpaid money and splitting it up between other copyright owners.

According to media reports right now there is an estimated one billion dollars being held for music which has already been streamed in the U.S - and some of that may belong to you.

Fortunately, the authors of the Music Modernization Act included rules to ensure you get to endorse who you believe should represent you on the MLC board. You can be a part of the process and have a voice. But if you don’t take action, you likely won’t be heard.
